The NFL overtime rules 2026 create a sequence of possession opportunities and conditional stopping points. They do not provide either team’s win probability. A useful probability tree therefore starts with what Rule 16 says can happen, then keeps every numerical estimate separate from the rule itself.

The biggest qualification is the word opportunity. The format does not unconditionally promise two completed offensive drives. An opening safety can end overtime immediately, and the regular-season clock can expire before the responding team begins or completes its opportunity.

What the 2026 regular-season rule actually guarantees

A regulation tie triggers modified sudden-death overtime and a new coin toss at midfield; the visiting captain calls it. After an intermission of no more than three minutes, the regular season has one 10-minute overtime period. Under the NFL’s controlling 2026 Rule 16, both teams must receive an opportunity to possess once unless the team kicking off scores a safety on the receiving team’s initial possession. That exception ends the game.

After the two rule-defined opportunities, a team that leads wins. If the first team scores zero on its initial opportunity, the next score by either team wins. If the teams are level after both opportunities, the next score by any method wins. But the 10-minute maximum still controls: the clock can reach 0:00 before the second opportunity starts or finishes. If the score is tied then, the game is recorded as a tie; if it is not tied, the leader wins. ESPN’s current rules summary independently describes the same clock, exception, and possible tie.

“Opportunity” is broader than a completed offensive series. Rule 16’s possession provisions say a kickoff counts as the receiving team’s opportunity, and a legal recovery by the kicking team means the receiver is deemed to have had that opportunity. They also define when possession changes on catches, interceptions, and loose-ball recoveries. That is why a tree built only from “Drive 1” and “Drive 2” can miss rule-valid paths.

The possession principle reached the regular season in 2025, when owners extended the response opportunity even after an opening touchdown but retained the 10-minute period, according to the Associated Press account of the change. The controlling 2026 rulebook carries that framework forward.

How postseason overtime differs

Postseason overtime shares the possession-opportunity principle and the opening kicking-team-safety exception, but it is not the same format. Each overtime period is 15 minutes. If the first period ends while the second team’s initial possession is unfinished, that possession continues into another period. Further 15-minute periods recur for as long as needed, so a postseason game cannot end in a tie, as specified in the NFL’s 2026 postseason overtime provisions.

Once both teams have had their opportunities, the same scoring transitions apply: a lead wins, while a scoreless first opportunity or a tie after both moves the game into next-score-wins territory. The 2026 rulebook’s postseason provisions also specify two-minute intermissions between overtime periods and another toss after a fourth overtime period if no winner has emerged.

How to build the rule-defined probability tree

Start with states, not percentages. The opening node is the safety exception versus every other outcome. The next nodes separate a zero-point first opportunity from a positive total. A response to a positive total can finish below it, exceed it, or match it. A match creates a sudden-death state; the regular-season clock adds a possible tie terminal, while the postseason creates another period instead.

Those branches are facts about sequence. Their probabilities are estimates. A team model would need conditional inputs for scoring, turnovers, defensive scores, remaining time, possession order, and later sudden-death outcomes. Multiplying unrelated league-wide averages would silently assume independence that the game state does not establish.

This distinction also separates a game forecast from how odds become implied probability. A market price can be converted into a break-even percentage, but that percentage does not populate this tree with true team probabilities.

A transparent synthetic branch example and its limits

Consider a deliberately simplified synthetic regular-season model. Here, Team 1 is the opening receiving side and Team 2 is the opening kicking and responding side. The model assigns 1% to the opening safety exception and 99% to all other paths. Given no safety, it assigns 40% to a zero-point first opportunity and 60% to a positive total. After zero points, the next-score branches are 50% for Team 2, 20% for Team 1, and 30% for no score before 0:00. After a positive total, the response finishes below it or runs out of time 35% of the time, exceeds it 20%, and matches it with time remaining 45%. From that matched state, the next-score branches are 40% for Team 1, 35% for Team 2, and 25% for clock expiry.
